Kosei-Ryu Karate-Do

There are two major lineages of Karate Do; Shōrin-ryū and Shōrei-ryū.

Shōrin-ryū is more heavily influenced by Chinese martial arts systems and is characterized with quick, light movements executed from more narrow stances.  The syllabus of Shōrin techniques includes a larger selection of more frequently used kicks, jumps, and spins.  Striking techniques are generally executed as "poison-hand" techniques and include less grappling, knee, and elbow applications.  Shōrin style karate focuses more on horizontal movements of the Hara and uses External Power and Inertia as primary sources of power.  Sai, kama, tanto, and nunchaku are the most commonly associated weapons with Shōrin styles.  Master Azato Yasutsune is the last recognized purist of Shōrin-ryū Karate-do and was one of the two teachers of Gichin Funakoshi.

Shorin style kata are divided into "pods" of quick, connected techniques that are visually similar to kung fu forms of the Shaolin temples.  Each pod of a Shorin kata expresses a complete thought and generally focuses on a common concept of focus, power, and/or movement.

Shōrei-ryū layers strong influences of Okinawan wrestling and staff fighting over its Chinese base.  It is characterized by big, powerful movements in deeper, wider stances.

Shorei style kata are performed with each technique and transition being given the same speed, time, and power throughout the duration of the form.  Without the idea of pods in the Shorei kata, each technique is expressed with full power and, at time, an almost mechanical nature to the transitions between techniques.
